It does seem rather weird to me, that a lot of mainlanders does seem to dislike learning English. Then why did so many of them come here in the first place? So puzzling. This seem to be quite different from the attitude of HK/TW immigrants back then, even if they were rich. Most of them do seem to genuinely at the very least want to learn English. Some even enjoys a more mainstream lifestyle.
On the flip side, there indeed is an exodus of ex-Canadian Hongers that have moved back to Hong Kong. I personally went back to HK for vacation for 3 weeks and find the experience suffocating. For 5 days I sneaked to Japan for some fresh air, and by the end of the entire Asian trip I was very relieved of being back home (Vancouver). Most of the friends I know in HK actually makes less and lives a much inferior lifestyle in HK than here (squeezing between busses and MTRs when they could be driving a bimmer here).
I am just dumb founded and simply cannot understand why many of them chose to go back to HK and be 2nd tier citizen (no right to vote), when I can enjoy all that Canada has to offer. The air, the skiing, the golfing, the driving, the tracking, etc etc. Canadian on average also has a higher income and has better spending power in general than HKers. Theoretically speaking, one does not only has the right to vote as a Chinese Canadian citizen, but can even run for various roles in the government if one wishes thru a completely democratic process. Not something as straightforward in HK. I simply fail to see why so many people chooses to go back, and is sad because with the dilution, most all the Chinese Canadians left now are of relatively new mainland immigrants these days.... Canadian Honger circles is left to be relatively much more sparring and few... |
