That sounds exactly like our first one. We are on our 2nd one now, white big one. It has been last for 2 months almost since we bought it. Hopefully we could keep it alive for another year. When we need to re-pot in? after all the flowers gone, or next spring?
My sister-in-law said the same thing, no direct sunlight. And our flower lady say no water into the middle stem area (is it what it calls?), otherwise it will die.

I actually just pour water in the pot.. until a little bit runs out to the dish below.
But my pots are cremeic pots, 2 of the has holes on the wall. One doesn't. And I mix my own soil + moss + bark/wood chips to use.
When repotting, I just trim off any dry/rotten roots.
I got one of mine from china town summer market years ago. Then the rest are from... home depote... I actually don't remember.
