Me too...same problem...I am debating whether to trade in my 10-year old car to get a new one this year, or should I wait until it can't be driven any more. (probably it can last another 3 or 4 years). But the problem is, mean while it can cost a lot to fix. Since I got barely enough cash to afford a new car, should I save it (which my rational side tells me to), or get a nice new car now....sigh..tough decision.

hee... my situation is a bit different la... I am thinking to jump onto a 100k car when the one I am driving is 4-yr old and it is working perfectly.  So it is pretty logical for me to not putting some stupid financial pressure on my family la.

Okie, back to your situation.  In my opinion, if you car is 10-yr old, it will last you at least another 3-4 years as you said.  I would think the 1st thing you want to do now is to do some "research" on your car.  Just simply ask any mechanic you know to see if the car are well-known on certain major problem.  (e.g. 99-00 Accord has pretty weak transmission).  I would say that 10-yr old is not that old lor.  But with the cash-back, low interest rate dealership now offering, it may be a good chance to change the car neh

like everyone suggested, i think when it comes to the time for considering if the car is worth keeping, or if it's a good time to get a new car, it totally depends on how financial ready you are, and how the condition of the car is currently at....

10 years old car doesn't mean anything, my car is 9 years old (99), has just over 100k, without any problem even i am tempted to get a new car, i am hesistated!

say if u are getting any new car, u will be looking at $300 a month (at least) and that's about $3600 a year...say if ur current ride, with all the repair it might need (not including basic oil changes and tire rotation etc cuz that has to be done if u have a new car as well)...but anything from all fluid flush / tune up / tires / brakes can be considered cuz for a new car, some of the things won't be needed for a least 2 years or 24k, or even 4 years and 48k....dun forget to include timing belt / water pump etc etc if the car is getting around 100k soon and u haven't got those done...

if just for the regular maintenance from above and it will cost u more than 1/2 of the money u are paying for the new car, might as well invest the money for a new car and enjoy it; cuz if anything break down, it might brought up pretty close to investing a new car...

That's true. However, if you are single and don't buy this "topless" car now... it will be even harder to make the decision to buy new car after you have family (or prepare to have family) la....

Thanks for all the advice la. Usually it takes about 1.5 to 2 years for my car to go back to service. And each service won't be just "oil change" la...most likely changing brake, or timing belt or other stuff as you mentioned. I estimate around $1500 for each visit so probably around 3K for next 3 years (provided no other "big" things got broken). If I don't buy the car and keep those chunk of $ on my hand, most likely I can generate more income (even I put into saving account I get some interest $ la)...so that's why it's not an easy decision for me. Nevertheless, my current state of mind is exactly like this title - 身痕 because if I don't have this amount of $ on hand, I won't even think about getting new car now at all. Now that I save up some cash, I was 身痕 to spend it rather than save it...sigh...
