Police said Thursday they have arrested three youths for attempted murder in Koshigaya City, Saitama Prefecture. The three, all 18, allegedly used a hammer to bludgeon the mother of the girlfriend of one of the boys on Wednesday.

Police said the three struck the woman in the head several dozen times, caving in part of her skull with the blows.

According to a TV Asahi report, the boys had apparently been waiting in the woman’s home, and attacked her when she returned from working at a part-time job at about 5 p.m. Despite severe head trauma, the woman managed to escape to a nearby office building and call the police. The boys were still in the woman’s home when police arrived, and were arrested immediately.

One of the boys confessed that they had intended to kill the woman, but gave no apparent motive, TV Asahi reported.
