Dolby sues RIM over patent infringement
Says its audio-compression technologies used in BlackBerrys, PlayBooks

Audio technology licensor Dolby Laboratories has filed a lawsuit against Research In Motion, alleging that the BlackBerry-maker used Dolby’s audio-compression technologies in its smartphones and PlayBook tablets without proper licenses.

The lawsuits, filed in the United States and Germany, seek financial damages for past use and injunctions to halt sales of unlicensed BlackBerry phones and PlayBook tablets.

“Litigation was regrettably our last resort after RIM declined to pay for the use of Dolby’s technology,” said Andy Sherman, general counsel of Dolby.

A spokeswoman for RIM was not immediately available to comment.




RIM is releasing its PlayBook at 20,000 locations in Canada and the U.S. in an effort to take on Apple’s iPad, which has been a huge success.
