SSD and RAM

hey, how many people are using SSD, and how much faster is it?

if I get a SSD, does that mean I dont need as much RAM, coz I can use the SSD with a larger virtual memory as cache?

any the good SSD deal now?

RAM still faster then SSD

You still need RAM, but RAM are so cheap, get 4GB+ w/ 64bit OS, good enough for most stuff.

Prelude

Ram and SSD has different usage.
SSD is not ideal for virtual memory as each write degrades the life of the block of the SSD.
Some people debate to even disable virtual memory or put virtual memory on second HDD instead.  So enlarge the virtual memory on SSD is not desired in general.
Ram are so cheap anyways and it's always faster than SSD.

So the whole idea of less ram with SSD is just wrong.

Like you got a good handling car, and you are thinking to use cheap tires to save money.
But a good handling car still need good tires to have good grip on the road to perform.

Agree with all the above.  Either way, buy SSD if you can afford it.

Even the slowest SSD will be faster than standard HDD. For laptops, the Kingston V series and Intel V series are good for everyday use. Of course, for more speed, the Intel M series or the Crucial C300 series are quite decent.

I would not go out any OCZ SSD, simply because their reliabilities have been questionable. Yes, they have fast SSD, but they don't *seem* to last as long. Also, my experience with OCZ's products have not been that great (flash memory, PSU, RAM), ALL of them failed within the warranty period.

I have 6GB of RAM and I disabled virtual memory and doesn't seem to have issue.

thank you all for the reply, i will see what i can upgrade with minimum cost , currently just running XP with a Quad core Q6600 @ 2.4G, 3GB RAM
