Don't know what he is using, but I think you can easily get by with a decent Epson Scanner, unless y ...

Medium format film still blows whatever Nikon D800, 5dm3 or whatever out of the water.  And I am talking about the potential you can get out of the negative, not a cheap scan made with a $160 scanner like I do.

The only digital stuff I've seen that can be compared to medium format is well, medium format digital backs or the Leica S2.

An Epson V300 that scan 35mm film is $99- US, is that out of your budget?  If yes, my guess is you can still buy used epson scanner which can do 35mm for less.

Shouldn't have brought up the digital vs film topic.
I guess at this point, it really depends on the settings, and equipments.

The best 35mm digital shooting at ISO100 may not comapre to medium format with the very best lens & drum scan.  My understand is once you get to such resolution, you introduce yourself more details, but a huge dust problems.  At that price point, a digital back is probably better.
When ISO is up, film start to introduce noise much earlier than digital, where it starts to lose it's edge in resolution even with drum scanner.

Then when we start talking about consumer scanner and not just shooting at ISO100, digital FF probably exceed film in some level of color/contrast and resolutoin.  Then we are also talking about 645 vs other larger MF.

I should have been more clear, but then I could be wrong.

This is a more recent article about digital vs film where the person like film better, but it's worthy reading for those who enjoy film.  I can see the tasteful char. of film over digital.  But then again, at the end of the day, there's alot more to it in photography than which is better.

I am not a technical person so I don't know anything about resolution or sharpness. However, the comment I hear most frequently from my viewers is that my photos have a 3D look that those shot with canon or nikon DSLRs don't have.
