i had this concept in mind where one was blinded, but it didn't really work so I left it like an ambiguous piece

I used to spent hours reading magazine at Chapters, and I have to say, my preference is a little diff. than most North America Fashion Magazine.
My finding was, I liked the UK or EUR version of those fashion magazine better.  I found that the NA magazine tend to focus too much on sex, or sexy with extremely strong lighting effect.  The Euro. UK tend to put in more interesting enviroment into the pictures, and overall a more balance photo.  There is one magazine which I bought (US) because it was good is called Zink.  http://www.zinkmagazine.com/main/index.php  .. I am not sure if everything they have are something I like, but I bought one of their Anniversary issue which I like.
Then also, for my own preference, I enjoy many of the asian magazine, where their style of photography tend to be less tinted... ..!  Maybe asian skins quality tend to stay nice and healthy much longer than (white)??  Or maybe Asian girls like to pretent they are cute, soft & beaufi.  Where americians women tend to focus on tough, rough, power over men?
What do you guys think??

BTW, do a search on google: for japanese fashion magazine photo, and british fashion ...., then american fashion..., it'll give you an idea of how the cover photo looks like..!

I am not so familiar with this topic. Since the whole purpose of fashion shots is to sell the fashion, I don't have enough knowledge to tell what kind of shots make women want to buy the clothes and which don't. But I bet there are some amazing shots out there that totally fail at selling the garments and vice versa.

At the end of the day, fashion photography is just a job that brings in the cash. I would look at them and be amazed at some of the stuff but I would never take them too seriously. If you have watched the documentary The September Issue, you would know that the whole fashion photography business has pretty much nothing to do with photography itself.

On the other hand, I read tons of photo books. They are much more refined and focused and you can learn things much more quickly.

LOL.. that's what I do all day years ago.  Sitting at chapters reading every book they have on photography that I am interested)  However, most of my books on portrait photograpy were bought in Japan.  As I think about it more.. I think my style of people photography is toward beauty shot, which is often enough something what people would look for in wedding portraits.

And I mention fashion photography, because you mentioned the tints color in fashion ads on your previous post.  And i was sharing my own finding, and preference.

In my many years of wedding photography expereince, I think the following is what I found.  Asian girls tend look at how pretty they are on the picture, if they look fit (thin), Caucasians are more open to the overall feel of the pictures.

I don't know much about Japanese portrait photography. My education mostly come from people like Alec Soth, Sally Mann, Paul Jasmin, Diane Arbus, etc. I don't go to Chapters (or Barnes & Nobles) because their selection is very limited. You will find a lot more good stuff at Half Price books or any smaller independent book shops.

Nah. I know very little too.., but then I am a Typicial HK Chinese who have read far too many HK/Japanese/Taiwan style magazine.  Plus, the 2 places I hanged out for hours in both Japan and HK were Bookstore...!!!

Either way, thanks for the tips, and when you have time, check out a couple Asian magazines, so that you know where I am coming from.

PS: I am glad that we can turn this conversation into something meaningful.  Some forum members may think I am naive to expect meaningful conversation here, but then if I am not naive, I would have left LYK ages ago.
