I had been alittle too busy to post until now.

Regards to what I try to explain on previous post about exposure, I'll use the following example to clarify my point.


The box is the subject aim for getting the correct exposure.

Amoung the 3 picture.  We have Normal, Under and Before correction.

Normal is correction exposure with any photoshop adjustment to bright it up.
Before correction is under-expose, and need correction
Under is the Before correct photo being corrected.

With the under-expose exposure corrected to the same level as the properly exposed image.  You can see the dark underexplose area simply don't have the same details as the properly exposed photo.  And under-expose image that's being corrected tend to be very contrasty as well.  That's what I see in HappyCow.

So, what I see on HappyCow's photo is the background has very little shadow details, the highlight are very contrastly.  It's look like a underexpose image that's digitally corrected.  I would have expect the person's face would show a little more level of shades..

I know I am not doing a good job to explain this, but hope someone still understand what I am trying to say

This may be a better example.  A real photo of my son =D

Using the Original photo.  I lower the mid tone of the image, then rebalance the brightness just like how you normally need to do to correct an underexposed image.

You can see how the background no longer have as much details, and the face has much higher contrast in it as well.

I don't really follow what you said about digital processing because I don't do any of that, but the shot was captured on E6 which has only about 4 stops latitude and the rapid fall off and lack of shadow detail are characteristics of slide film. Similarly, slides also have much higher contrast than negative film, although Sensia is already one of the lowest contrast slides available.

And if you look at the two shots that follow that one, they have the same rapid fall off. Don't tell me that I underexposed in all 3 shots.

I hear you.  I didn't know it was film when I first made the original comment on your photo.  Yet, I had my good share shooting films for years ages ago as well.

In the good old days, I learn to select the type of film to shoot the type of shooting I do.  Using slide with minimal latitude and high contrast for an image where the background is in shadow area, where your 2 main subject, the man and the baby also have a good level exposure diff.  it just wasn't a lighting condition suitable for the film you had at the time.  If this is in a wedding, it would have been a complete failure.  Some type of fill flash or reflector woud be needed, unless I can made my subject move to a lower contrast area.
Yet, I knw this is no wedding, and you as a photographer is the judge of what you want.

I think it just isn't my cup of tea.  Photography is an art, so I respect what you choose.  So, let me apologize.

The weather is getting warmer, and I am so looking forward to do tons of non work related photography.  So, let's us all have some fun this up coming summer =D

That's right. If I were doing a specific shoot, I would choose the film that suits the lighting and the weather the most. But when you travel, it's not possible to pick a single film that would look best in all situations across multiple days. I happen to like the way slides look during daylight with deep shadows, but I understand not everyone has the same feeling towards it.

A recent trend in street photography is to capture scenes that have extremely high contrast. I am not a huge fan of that but it's something to be aware of.
