I think I'll happy with this camera.
Last year, is when I stopped doing any weddings. So, the 1 series is too heavy and big, and I just don't like the 5dm2 I had.
To most people, going from a APS-C camera to a FF of any kind is an upgrade. But to me it's the opposite when going from a Pro body to a entry level FF.
My complaints with all the non 1D series camera (Except 7D)
1> The only relaible Auto Focus Point is the center focus, not a big deal when shooting with lens with smaller aperture, where you have plenty of room for focus errors (Depth of field) but for me who shoot with prime where aperture is usually anywhere from f/1.8 to f/2, there barely any room for errors, it's by mm.
2> I use M and Av mode 99% of the time. With Canon, the top wheel in Av mode is for aperture, but when doing M mode, it becomes the shutter, and the back wheel is what you use for the aperture. Before the 5dm3, the 7D and the 1D series are the only cameras with Canon which allow you to swap that fuction, so that you keep your top wheel for aperture control in M mode. 5Dm3 is the first non Pro FF which allows you to custom configure it. Not a big deal for people who don't use M mode.
3> The 5dm3 is no 1dx when it comes to speed, but the AF coverage and options will open up great possibility for sport and action photography. It's better AF system than the 1D4.
4> comparing the 5Dm2 and 5dm3, the build of the 5dm3 is a little closer to 1d series, it still doesn't fit my hand as well as comparable Nikon body, but it's better than before.
5> Video capability over 1ds3. When I had the 1dsm3, I wish it has video capability like the 5dm2. or the 5dm2 has the AF capability of the 1D series. Turn out I don't need to go to the 1Dx, since the 5dm3 offers me what I need without the weight.
6> For lots of professional photography works, High quality ISO 100-1600 is quite often all then need. Yet, Being able to shoot higher ISO with clean image quality really opens up some opportunity.
eg. I was in HK taking picture of my brother's 3 Cats with a 60D + 135 f/2 lens. With all the light turns on at night, it still requires ISO 3200, where noise is OK, but you would hope it's better.
eg. While I was in Beijing Fobidden City, taking picture of those inside area without flashes can easily require ISO3200 or above. Stop being able to shoot at ISO6400 with Image Quality as clean as a 5Dm2 at ISO1600 would be awesome.
Again, in Beijing where some area of the city is still relatively bright during the night (Just like HK), yet you probably still need ISO1600 or above. Well.. imagine getting those night time picture at ISO1600 looking as clean as ISO800 on a 5Dm2 ..!
I honestly, think the 5Dm3 would be a camera I can keep for a good long time with Canon. My future collection will be toward those rangefinder looking camera where it allows me to experiece another type of photograpy where you dont normally want to do with a huge DSLR on your hand. |
