It is not easy to find the first job after grad... I grad with a comp sci degree with 5 semesters of Co-op too in June... i started looking job since Feb/Mar, (well, avaialble to work in May), and did ...

I looked into Langara/BCIT programs and I'm planning to take their design program next semester.  I dont really have any computer-art skills, because I mostly took art history, painting, sketching for my major.  Plus, the only computer related art course at UBC that I took..I h..ave to say there is no structure to that course at all..poorly taught.  Thats why I didnt go further in digital arts...but I hope its not too late to get into it now.

I think thats just your own bias point of view.  I really dont think there is anything special about being University gradutes nowadays.  My frds that grad from BCIT found jobs and better pay than some grads from Universities.  Plus, there are lots of graduate out there like me thats really trying hard to find a job.

Acutally I have a lot of volunteer art experiences while I was in University.  But I guess a lot of company doesnt really care about 'ART' experiences cause they dont neccessarily relate to office.  and FYI, I did think about my future before hand,, but sometimes things just doesnt go the way you plan~ plus, the art industry in vancouver is so limited, and there are so many of us out there looking for the same things.

fine art = design? Then why does people need to go to design schools like Emily Carr?

Fine arts looks at all aspects of art, from sketching, painting, ceramics, etching, digital art......~
Emily Carr is famous, thats why people go there.  Plus everything they teach there are geared toward artistic development right from the beginning unlike univeristy.

May be you would like to consider some courses from Vancouver Film School. http://www.vfs.com/
Gaming, film industry are quite popular in Vancouver and in my opinion they do need design people, so you can consider la.

depends on what wage do u prefer?

if you don't care about the wage and just want to get more experience.. it's not hard to find one now .. I always can find job easily within a week..

it's really depends what u prefer? if you just look for big company with high wage.. but without experience. it's really good luck.. for u..

unless you know somebody there..
my first summer job is part time data entry before.. and got 1 month experience ..

before  I look for full time office  job..

well, everyone start from zero.  How do ppl get 'experience', they get it from their first job.  How are ppl going to gain experiences if your not given the chance to gain it in the first place.  Im pretty sure you didnt know everything when you first started.
Plus, I'm looking for an office job because its another alternative to gain other types of job experience that will be handy in the future~ its better than doing nothing at all~~ now that is call 'not planning for future'

Are the jobs you applied art-related?
I think before you apply for the job, you need to think why the employer wants to hire you and how you gonna stand out from the other applicants.....

if u want to get a office job, stop just going to lecture and work on some "artistic" volunteer! find some volunteer job that involves some simple office tasks. Be realistic is what u need to do

what? u expect the bosses out there would like to hire someone who just took courses in "art history, painting, sketching"???

I am an IT people, I was in your situation few years ago while .com bubble just broke. what I did was trying hard to find ANY volunteer/part-time job that are IT related.

Not every fresh grad got no working experience like you...many of them working part-time to pay for their tuition..and the office job that you applied.. they dun really need you to have previous office experience..but at least work experience..(maybe they want to call your previous employers to see if what type of person u are..for ex..coming to work on time.. hard worker.etc..) Even if you work at Starbucks, Safeway, or McDonald.. at least the employer knows that you have customer service experience..
