I think he means since his wife was "landing" to become a landed immigrant in Canada. They can bring their personal items in (including jewlery) without being taxed.

Safety book in HK was how we handle ours.  Wife isn't going to wear gold in any occasion anyway.

Agree!! DON'T EVER lie to immigration/custom officers.
3 of my friends visited me and all the gifts that I asked them to bring to me cost less than $60 (or $50.. I forgot). It's just some skin cream and a pair of court shoes. I told them to report all those to custom. It's better to pay tax then to be black listed. I also told them to bring along and print out my address, contact info and my job title, the hotel address, and the trip planning with them. So they can answer all questions from the officers.

all the stuffs that bring in by an non-resident should  be bring out by the same person when she leaves canada.  otherwise those are gifts to a resident in canada and suppose to pay tax if the value is over $50?  $60/each?

我覺得最好搵個visitor(唔係resident)嘅親戚幫你帶過嚟。。。
well, your friend may like that taiwanese woman, just send home right away.

I second this... sometimes, depends on your luck, if an immigration officer is kind enough (& provided they have met their goal for that day), they will let go because it's wedding gift and they would compensate for your honesty.

don't ar... my friend (non-resident, a visitor) brought in a DVD player n years ago (when DVD player is very expensive back then) for his sister-in-law, got caught at the immigration, trapped for 3 hrs and got black-listed from then on, very bad experience and embarrassed, even worst, he has a lot of trouble EVERY TIME he entered Canada from then on... DONT EVER try this way, your visitor relative will hate you... my suggestion is to 1) report everything and let them tax on it, or 2) redeem everything into cash and bring cash, or 3) leave everything in hk safe deposit box and bring in little by little every time.

I won't risk to do any smuggling like action lor. I wonder if it is possible to ask and pay for a certain fee to any of the "gold shop" in HK, ask them to write an estimation for how much your jewelery worth on a formal document (at a lower price if possible, of course la). Then bring everything to canada with honest declaration to custom, say they're all wedding gifts from your families, hope they'll let you go or at least to tax you base on your document la.
