Flooding devastates millions in Pakistan

Monsoon rains have caused extensive flash flooding throughout Pakistan, killing more than a thousand people and causing widespread damage. Around 2.5 million people have been affected, and the rains are expected to worsen this week.

The Pakistan Red Crescent Society, which has branches and volunteers across the country, has been helping survivors since the flooding began by delivering food, health services, shelter and relief items (including hygiene kits and cooking equipment).

The Canadian Red Cross has been working in Pakistan since the earthquake of 2005. Two in - country Mobile Health Units have been deployed to affected communities. The Canadian Red Cross will also be providing a seven person paramedic team to support health needs in camps. The Canadian Red Cross is on stand-by if additional assistance is required.

Canadians wishing to help support relief efforts underway in Pakistan are encouraged to contribute by donating online, calling 1-800-418-1111 or contacting their local Red Cross office. Cheques should be made payable to the Canadian Red Cross, earmarked “Pakistan Floods 2010” and mailed to the Canadian Red Cross National Office, 170 Metcalfe Street, Suite 300, Ottawa, Ontario, K2P 2P2.

專家警告﹕泥災死亡增至702人 今起3日料暴雨 舟曲恐再滅城
【明報記者劉洪慶舟曲報道】甘肅泥石流災難救援工作10日晚已過黃金72小時，官方最新傷情指死亡人數上升至702人，失蹤1,042人。但遭受重創的舟曲，隨時可能再被山泥、滑坡滅城。

記者10日造訪今次泥石流始發點、距最嚴重受災區5公里外的翠峰山谷，發現大量泥石聚集，一旦再遭強降雨，可能有多達2,500萬立方米、足以填滿近2.5個杭州西湖的山泥湧下，二度?滅舟曲縣城。甘肅地質專家直言，「現在任何措施已經無濟於事，只能祈求不下雨」。甘肅蘭州中心氣象台預報，11日起一連3日，舟曲及白龍江上游將出現暴雨天氣。　

8日凌晨發生的暴雨泥石流，將部分舟曲縣城和三眼村、月圓村等村落夷為平地。記者10日來到三眼村旁邊山谷三眼溝朝內1公里處的翠峰山腹地山谷，發現其原本結構和1997年修建的6條泥石流攔截壩，已全部被摧?。山谷內聚集大量砂石，伴隨小溪河道兩邊向山體延伸，僅河道處砂石就高達5米左右，山谷兩邊的山崖垂直挺立，剝落的山石外露，小石頭隨風滑落；在最外部的山體上，前日留下的泥漿印記，高近10米。

「情形難言樂觀」，國土資源部環保司一位熊姓處長在考察後說，翠峰山谷中除強降水之外，聚集大量泥石、山體坡度、深溝等其他泥石流形成要素均已達到，一旦再次遭遇強降雨，不排除再次爆發泥石流。

「任何措施已無濟於事」

甘肅省地質監測站副總工程師吳宏亦直言「形勢嚴峻」。他說，舟曲縣城位於翠峰山泥石流扇形位置，據測算，翠峰山谷共聚集近5,000萬立方米泥石，一旦遭遇強降雨，可轉化為多達2,500萬立方米泥石流砂石，而今次舟曲泥石流湧出的山谷泥石，總量不足200萬立方米，僅為儲存量的三十分之一。此外在舟曲縣城下游，還存在兩處各儲存5,000至6,000萬立方米泥石的滑坡體，一旦遇暴雨，也將流下大量砂石泥漿，直接堵塞白龍江河道，不排除出現「水漫舟曲縣城」情形。他神情嚴肅地說：「現在任何措施已經無濟於事，只能祈求不下雨，否則此前工作基本作廢，工作人員只能撤離泥石流現場。」

目前舟曲救災仍在繼續。在國務院總理溫家寶回京後，副總理回良玉昨繼續在舟曲災區考察，他要求抓住72小時生命救援黃金期，展開拉網式搜救。
