Cheap + Good Wireless N 300 Router - D-Link DIR-615

Hey all,

I was on a quest to look for a cheap and good wireless N routers. Cheap is easy to find but "good" is hard as it must have "DD-WRT" support. After a bit of poking around, recently I found out the D-Link DIR-615 lines works quite well.

According to DD-WRT, only hardware revision C1/C2/D2/E3/E4 of DIR-615 will work. All of my stock at work are C1 (barcode label will say). These routers are on-sale many times a year for under $40, it's a cheap way to build bridges, repeaters. Don't get fooled by "Basic" as it said on the box, with the proper settings, it can be "very advanced".

For some odd reason, the only firmware that works without problem is the June 30 build.

So.... if you want wireless N 300 that is cheap and flexible for deployment, go for the DIR-615. I can't but to wonder why the WRT54GL are still so much money@!!

My old Linksys WRT54G v6 has served me well for years as repeaters, but the DIR-615 just replaced it with a much bigger range and speed.

I have not have any good luck with Telus equipments in the recent years, their only good ones were the 3Com ADSL modems back in the days.

You can call Telus and have them send you a regular modem rather than the wireless gateway.

no, 2wire is not a good router, but at least better than the siemens.  since they are provide by telus, i don't know where can i get a regular modem in town.  or should i set the 2wire to bridge and use the dir615?

I don't think D-Link will help you if you flashed the thing.

Also, the 2Wire gateway is not a strong router to begin with. You probably have better luck getting a regular modem and use the DIR-615 instead.

try to connect it with my telus 2wire, but don't work.  the computer can detect the dir615, the signal was too week.  spent hours with dlink, but still had no luck.  so finally gave up.  just thinking do i need to shut off the wireless function from 2wire first.
i just want to increase the speed and stability

There are two ways to make it a repeater: WDS and Client-Bridge.

I like Client-Bridge because it is easy to setup and I can add ethernet hardware to it.

The WRT54G series are too old now, the current DD-WRT series are more like bug fixes. The new K26 kernal only works with the current N hardware. I find it compare to the older v24 to K26, K26 runs faster. I guess they don't have to include wireless drivers for the legacy G systems??

My wireless is merely just internet access and media sharing, nothing really confidentials... if I need complete security, I will go wired la.

i don't see how increase range makes others easiers to hack it, encryption is still the same.
as to setup bridges and repeaters, you can set up your routers (not the main one) to bridge mode, not all firmwares allows it, that is why DD and tomato are popular because they allow bridge mode. =)

I am using WRT54GS V3 and after I see this post, I upgraded DDWRT to the latest. Do you know if there is any improvement?

It is not hard to flash again and I am happy with it.
