Avoid multi-tasking and focus only on the kids

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - There's a warning for parents after a two-year-old boy died after ending up in some shallow water at a lake near Invermere. One safety expert says when the kids are that young you shouldn't take your eyes off of them, ever.

Ian Thomas says one thing parents should avoid is multi-tasking after arriving at a campsite because while you unload the car, the kids are splashing around in the water.

"They fall down and they can't get up.  Or they fall in and they try to breathe as soon as they fall in rather than holding their breath and they can become incapacitated."  Thomas says drowning in shallow water is also common, so parents should never assume low water levels aren't dangerous.

He adds getting the kids used to playing in the water at an early age is essential and every parent should learn how to provide CPR.

On Friday the two-year-old toddler fell into shallow water.  He was unresponsive after being pulled from the water.  He was airlifted to a hospital in Calgary, but didn't make it through the night and died early Saturday morning
