VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - Premiers from all 13 provinces and territories are in Vancouver today. This is Christy Clark's first Council of the Federation meeting and the economy is expected to be a central topic.
The recession has been over for some time, but growth has been slow, in part because the US economy doesn't seem to have any positive momentum these days.
Canada's trade relationship with Asia is growing fast, especially with India and China. The leaders will talk about building relationships with those countries. Recently, BC softwood exports to China exceeded those to the US for the first time ever.
Federal transfer payments and health care are also major topics at these annual meetings. Western premiers have been asking for a national disaster mitigation plan to deal with flooding and forest fires, which are issues every year. |
