China upsets Canada at women's world curling championship

VERNON - China's Bingyu Wang won a battle of the only two undefeated rinks this morning at the 2008 Ford women's world curling championships, handing Canada's Jennifer Jones a 9-7 defeat before a stunned crowd of 1,318 at the Greater Vernon Multiplex.

With the victory, the surprising team from China, not considered among the pre-tourney favourites, moved into sole possession of first place in the round robin with a 6-0 record while Team Canada fell to 5-1.

Jones and her Winnipeg rink will attempt to get back on the winning track in tonight's evening draw against Debbie McCormick of the U.S. while the Chinese will try to keep their winning streak going in the afternoon against the same Americans.

In other morning results, Switzerland's Mirjam Ott stayed solidly in the hunt at 5-1 by doubling Scotland's Gail Munro 8-4, Russia's Liudmila Privivkova crushed Katerina Urbanova of the Czech Republic 11-4 and 1988 world champion Andrea Schopp beat Sweden's Stina Viktorsson 8-3.

Canada seemed to have control of its showdown with China, holding the hammer in a 7-7 tie playing the 10th end. All Jones needed with her final stone was a fairly wide open draw anywhere in the full eight-foot. However, the Canadian skip put a little too much on her shot and it slid into the 12-foot rings near the back of the house, allowing the Chinese to steal two and claim the victory.

"I thought it was going to be okay," said Jones. "But it turned out I was just a little bit too heavy."

"I can't remember the last time Jennifer missed a shot like that," said Canadian second Jill Officer. "I also thought it was going to be fine. We were just keeping it clean."

The Asian teams like China and Japan are doing well in this game.

Just like badminton.

But I am a bit surprised about curling... b/c usually, you get to be good b/c the people surrounding u are good as well to create competition and exp. exchange...

i believe that the Chinese government "placed" the Chinese team in Canada and hired Canadian coaches to train them...
