I was trying to change the struct of my car myself but I broke the head of the bolt that connect the struct to the lower control arm....... so I need to seek professional help.

I asked a shop and they said they can't fix it but they said I can either find a second hand lower control arm so that I can forget about the broken bolt and replace the struct and the arm together or I can find someone to take the broken bolt out for me.

Before I go out to the junk yard to look for a used lower control arm, I want to see how much is it to take the bolt out. So, I took my car to a shop called AccutXch (精X or X誠) in Richmond for a quote. They were busy so I needed to drop off my car and I told the girl in the office to give me a call when they have a quote. I dropped off my car at round 9:30am and they finally called me at 1pm and said they have taken the bolt out and asked me to pay $103 dollar for it!!

I talked to the boss and he kept saying that he needed to take something off before he knows if he can fix it, so he started working on it. But the point is, I DID NOT ask him to work on it, all I need is a quote, then he repeated that he can't give me a quote before he start working on it. I asked him why didn't he tell me about it so that I can decide whether I want him to do it or not, then he said every shop will do the same so it doesn't matter. At the end he said it is probably a communication error but 9 out of 10 of his customers don't need a quote. So, I have no choice but to pay for it.

Now, I have to find another shop to do the struct for me, taking the struct out is like taking 2 more nuts off after the removing that broken bolt, but now I have to pay for all the labour again. Plus, if I can find a used lower control arm in a cheap price, I could probably save the $$ to take the broken bolt of.

Thru out the conversation, he did not say sorry, and obviously he thinks he is right, but I don't think I am wrong.......so who is right????

我知道有好多shop都會收檢查費, 冇人會想白做, 格價既人實在太多; 有時架車上左架檢查完又搵唔到個客, 放佢落黎上第二架之後又比人鬧, 正所謂左右做人難, 個個客都話等車用, 人就得"一個" (咁多), 手就得一對...

其實好多時候最重要都係搵個相熟既車房/ mechanic, 你覺得信得佢過你先會放低, 放低左之後就唔好唔信人地 (至少, 大家講清講楚, 識既都想你返轉頭既jei; 不過其實唔識既都係當識多個人, 不過有d人唔係咁諗)?

話就話你可以選擇唔做, 不過你可能都要比番檢查費, 再加上你係junkyard到搵番黎既control有冇bend你又唔知, D bushing得唔得都仲話有得睇下...

其實notgoddy 用既example唔係好岩, squeegee beggar係會強行幫你做野之後要錢, 車行如果個客真係唔肯比錢跟本冇人會想白做, 所以佢地唔會強行做一D野...

唔一定, 睇係咩, 同一個job比心機做同趕住做其實係有分別; 好多flat rate既都係做左先算, 梗係快手啦; 做多架搵多架喎...

First, if I were you, I wouldn't even leave my car to some shop that i don't know without sorting everything out 1st.

ok... back to your case.  For mechanics, they have books indicatiing how many hours it would take to do certain things on specific car.  So, they don't need to take out everything before they can give u an estimate, if you can describe precisely what needs to be done or what the problem is.  And I can tell you that the time indicated is usually more than enough for the job.

If you don't know what needs to be done, and the mechanic needs to find out before he/she can give u a quote.  They can always give you a call after they find out.  If you decided not to fix it at that time, you will likely need to pay a inspection fee (which is roughly $70 - $90 per hour).  

Well, i guess there is nth u can do now.  Next time, just take your car away if they refuse to give you a rough estimate lor.
