Young co-workers

My work place has more than half is student, I will say 75% including management personal.

I understand summer is coming..and so is holiday and fun.

But I hate those high school student and fresh grad called in sick the day before their shifts.
Sick? absolutely not. They got caught going party; clubbing; going to camp by other people.

As senior employee, me, and my manage all knew about this..   but we can't do anything about it..
b'cuz manager have no prove given. Manager has to see it herself. and she doesn't go to those nightly open places.
Sick note from doctors doesn't work neither.. seems they can access to doctor notes like their memo pads

I, myself, had putting their performance aside and not to talk about it...
still it drives me MAD
These young men and women are so not committed, yet, they want (and whine) more hours and money to buy stuff and clothes. ( and then they just call in sick whenever they want.)

heard about wrongful dismissal?
You can't just fire someone based on the pattern of sick leave taken.. unless you can prove the individual is faking..

Lay off 1 person that takes sick days all the time and under perform will give a warning to the rest.

Change the employment contract.
if it is in the contract, i wouldnt touch it.
Documentating a pattern is not a smart move, so if you are able to establish a pattern, what can you do? Discipline the employee becoz of too many monday sick leave? I'd love to learn how!

Document the days that people don't show up and try to establish a pattern.  If someone constantly calls in sick on a Monday or the first day of shift and what not, you can possibliy bring on some kind of disciplinary action.

The economy here is booming, that is why the employers are looking for workers as there are many positions. But how were these kids hired in the first place?

Loma, it all depends on your contract.  If you don't have one,  you are legally entitled to paid legal holiday and paid annual vanacation.  If you employer offer you addtional 2 days on top of the above holidays, that is extra.

i think the parents are the root cause of these kids' problem nowadays.  it's sad that their parents don't know how to teach them and provide luxury for them for no reason.  even if the parents work so hard till puke blood, they still save all their money for their kids to WASTE.  yes, it's wasted, not spent.  kids don't treasure anything they get and obviously not respecting their job as they are only "earn money to buy flowers to wear".  it has to be a really bad recession that they don't get the luxury anymore.  then they'll know the true way to earn money and respect their job.

My boss only allows us to have two days sick leave with paid annually ........  is it legal?
