saw the clip on news last night. disturbing.

Just want to let you guys know that emergency is not a first come first serve place.  It depends on the severity/acuity of each pt.  Pt just having stomach/abdominal pain + vomiting(which is what a lot of ppl are there for) are usually not seen first as there are many many ppl having chest pains, respiratory problems, etc who needs to be seen first.  Also, for abdominal pain + vomiting, usually ppl are sent to the treatment section of emergency.  It is not all up to the doctors/nurses as you need a room in order to be seen.  If all beds are taken, you have to wait.  While you wait, I hope you understand that a lot of other staffs are trying to move the ppl in emergency beds/stretchers to a ward, and there are many times that wards have limited beds available.  That's why ppl in hospital are discharged right away, so that there are empty beds for other ppl from emergency.

Last time I went to the emergency, there was a chinese lady who was complaining of headache, dizziness and fainting. She didn't speak a word of english and refused the help of a translator..she insisted the hospital staff call her daughter. When he daughter arrived, her daughter was so mad at her mom and started yelling at her in the emergency waiting area. Turns out, the mom walks to the emergency room every other day and pretends to be sick so her daughter would come see her...the daughter was yelling at her mom for at least 1/2 hour and she tried translating for her mom while she was being admitted by the nurses. The daughter was mad because everytime she goes to work, her mom walks to emergency...in the end, she left her mom in the hospital, even though the staff told her she cannot go because she was needed to help translate for her mom. Once the daughter left, we saw her mom walk around as if nothing happened and she stopped acting "sick". Eventually the mom walked out of emergency and went home alone.

This is a really good example of people misusing the medical care for attention...it's sad that the lady had to resort to using medical emergency to get her daughter's attention...but because of this lady, everyone's care was delayed for at least 1/2 to 1 hour while they were trying to find her daughter and help her translate...sigh

Another time I went, there was this lady admitted into emergency who refused to be tested or even touched by nurses...she kept yelling that she would only trust doctors but usually there's only 1 or 2 doctors and 10 nurses around...so she kept yelling and yelling and refusing to be treated until a doctor saw her...

My experience with the emergency room services in Richmond Hospital was not bad at all.

First time was sent by ambulance.  Although I waited for 6 hours in bed but the paramedics always attend to me for that 6 hours.  I ended up having an operation done that night.

Second time I went there was in the middle of the night.  I was lucky enough that there were no one waiting in the reception and I only had to wait for 15 minutes.  A nurse was with me all the time and after the treatment a paramedic was helping me out and he even told jokes to make me feel better.

Third time was during the day.  There were lots of people waiting and I had to wait for 2 to 3 hours.  Everything went smoothly.  No one gave me any hard time.

I am not sure about other people's experience with the hospital here.  I think some medical staff do have temper after working under stress for such a long time, and some staff are just sick of people abusing the emergency services.  I remember the second time when I was in the emergency room there was an old lady next to me.  she kept whinning of her back problem and she didn't want to move a bit when the nurse helped her to change her diaper (that old lady was more than 200 lbs).  The nurse was mad at her because she knows the old lady was just over react.
