Cathay Pacific Airbus with 290 people on board to make emergency landing at YVR

RICHMOND (NEWS1130) - An Airbus is reportedly making an emergency landing at YVR in mere moments. The flight has 290 people on board including passengers and crew. The Cathay Pacific Airbus was leaving for Hong Kong from YVR when the pilot dispatched tower with a 'flap problem'. They have dumped fuel into the ocean, and are expected to make an emergency landing within the hour (as of 4:34pm).

Fuel happens quite regularly, but usually at high attitudes where the fuel evaporates quickly so the pollution is spread as evenly around the world as possible.

It is unfortunate that they have to dump fuel into our local ocean.

Thats 8-10 hrs of flying unless she can dump the fuel.
The green folks cannot tolerate any violation, sometimes is almost have 290 people killed than kill another school of fish.

some planes can dump fuel, some cannot. depends on the plane model. if the plane cannot dump fuel it has to fly circles in the sky until it burned enough fuel to be under the max landing weight.

Unfortunately, people's lives are a lot more important than pollution.

Planes cannot land with a full load of fuel on board. It will break the landing gears straight away if it ever attempts it... you'll see the max take off weight vs max landing weight is very very different. This is why it needs to dump fuel and to dump it over homes might make some mothers angry because their washing becomes soaked in avgas.

【明報專訊】溫哥華國際機場昨日下午發生九霄驚魂,一架載有290名乘客及機組成員、從溫哥華飛往香港的國泰客機,在起飛後因襟翼燈號異常,需折返溫哥華緊急降落,但飛機需要圍繞溫哥華島及列治文上空近兩個小時,將燃料丟棄後始急降,傍晚終安全覑陸,有驚無險,飛機通宵留在機場檢查,乘客分別被安排入住酒店或自行返家,預定今晨9時30分再起飛。

載有290名乘客的空中巴士班機,昨日下午2時半起飛後不足1小時,機師發現輔助起飛的襟翼(flap)的燈號異常,決定折返溫哥華國際機場,並通知機場緊急戒備,當局派出多輛救援車輛在機場跑道候命,氣氛緊張。

由於飛機滿載燃料,因此機師先行飛往溫哥華島上空盤旋,以及在空中釋出燃料,經過約兩個小時的半空驚雲,飛機於下午4時59分返回溫哥華機場安全降落,事件沒有任何人受傷,機場方面及各救援部門始鬆一口氣。

飛機在返回溫哥華後,維修人員即時詳細檢查及緊急維修,原定在晚上7時左右完成檢查維修,重新加油後原機、原機組成員、原乘客飛回香港,但航空公司審慎起見,最後決定將飛機停在機場一晚,並安排各乘客入住酒店。

國泰航空市場副總裁莫勒(Scott Mowrer)指出,在班機安全降落溫哥華機場後,經過重新檢查,發現只是訊號燈故障問題,確定襟翼並無任何機械問題,修復燈號後,基本上飛機即可正常飛行。

莫勒曾經到飛機上安慰受驚乘客,據他描述,機組和乘客均很冷靜,並沒有因飛機需要折返原出發機場就出現焦躁不安。另外,國泰航空在等待時間,為乘客安排了特別食物和飲料。

「那感覺並不好受」

有乘客昨晚對媒體表示,飛機起飛後不久獲悉飛機有問題要折返溫哥華機場,「那種感覺並不好受」。有一位華裔乘客表示,他對航機的安全仍然有信心。另一位返回家中度宿一宵的白人乘客稱,航機在今晨起飛打亂了他的行程,他需要緊急通知香港的友人另作安排。

溫哥華國際機場是在下午3時過後,接獲國泰航空CX839航班請求緊急降落後,立即啟動緊急降落機制,為可能發生的緊急狀況作準備,包括皇家騎警、消防車及救護車均在機場路道各自就位,進出機場的各個橋樑,更有警車在橋邊待命。

警察的出現,一度傳出所有進出機場的橋樑道路都將封路的消息,後來證實只是虛驚一場。

空中盤桓釋出燃油

莫勒說,該班機的機長John Hagan有19年的駕機經驗,他在飛機起飛後約1小時左右,發現有指示燈(indicator light)顯示,襟翼的運作可能有問題,機長曾嘗試在機上解決問題未果,後來與國泰位於香港的總公司聯絡,總公司認為一切以安全為重,要求飛機折返出發的溫哥華機場,重新檢查後無問題再出發。

莫勒說,飛機緊急降落後,飛機維修工程人員立即上飛機檢查,並確定襟翼運作正常,且修復故障的燈號,並反覆多次檢查,最後確定可繼續飛行到香港,但航班比原定出發時間要延遲多個小時。

至於有報道指飛機在返回溫哥華前,在溫哥華島上空盤桓2小時,在空中釋出大部分燃料,過程頗為驚險,但莫勒說,飛機按照折返機場緊急降落的安全規定作,放燃料是其中一道程序

"dump pollution into the sea" does not mean sending the fuels into the sea per se... it means that the plane is flying over the area to burn off fuel so it can land safely....
