CHINADIAN CHINESE

You knowwhen you are a Chinadian Chinese when:

You cannotfind any Chinese character on any of your current ids.

Your lastname used to go before your given name.

Your givenname is broken into 2 pieces, and you have no idea what to do with the middlename.

You onlyspeak Chinese on your cell phone, at home, or in Chinese malls.

It takesyou an extra 2-3 seconds to think in English in order to engage in a normalCanadian conversation.

You havefamily members who speak and understand no English at all, and they continue tosurvive because of you.

When awhite person speaks Chinese to you, you feel like waking up from your dream.

You mighthave heard Gordon Campbell and Stephen Harper greeting you with Gong Hei FatChoi on TV once a year.

When yousee the totem pole in a park or museum, you wonder if your culture will becomea tourist’s souvenir in 50 years.

You used tospeak Chinese to every non-white person you met when you first immigrated, whether they actually were Koreans, Japanese, Philipino or native.

You have seenpeople criticizing someone right in front of his/her face by using the Chinesechannel.

The mainreason you have stopped swearing in public is that you are not comfortable withthe English foul words.

The mainreason you can swear as much as you want in public is that you are still theChinese driving the BMW.

You stillbelieve white people are the foreigners, and they believe you are theforeigner.

You put upa smile when you don’t know how to answer or reply in English.

You spend aportion of your time everyday digging into the Chinese media. Every now andthen, you discover a word that you have forgotten.

You’ve hada hard time understanding the English version of Tao Te Ching.

Sometimesyou are proud of yourself being an immigrant, not a refugee.

You mightor might not need to learn more English. No one else needs to learn moreChinese.

You knowyou can calculate much faster than a non-Chinese speaking person with your 九因歌, when neither of you were using acalculator.

You knowthe cultural barrier is more than the face and skin.

Wheneveryou are not in the mood to talk, you can easily go back to the first day in Canada andreply: NO ENGLISH.

i am 新移民 and 老華橋. depends on how other people see me. or choose to believe who i am.
my point is: i was trying to entertain you guys by writing something close to the mainstream.

i consider myself a non-mainstream. not canadian. not chinese. nor mainstream chinese in canada. despite what it says on my ID.

there are people in the society who are continually pushing the boundary. including those who are good at profane chinese literature. like seriously they are creative. i can tell you i am into pushing the boundary. by every legal and lawful means. in order to make people not to think in extremes and or stereotyping the others whom they have little or no knowledge about. (and that person might just be myself. me being the stereotyping nut)

consider some years ago it was considered normal for our ancestors to wrap women's feet. it was against the social norm to re-married. yes. i am an academic crap. and i see things that are happening. what you are getting from my 段野 might just reflect how open-minded you are. or how open-minded our society allows us to be.

if you like to change it. do it with political correctness. unless you don't mind the current authority going after your ess.
if you like the current situation*. perhaps. there is nothing more i can say. (and i beg the hacker not to hack my computer again. i know nothing about technology)

----The Lost Global Person

* what situation? i am totally satisfied

i only scored 4 points, so is it good or bad?

i read your last statement too, seems like you are lost in your middle-age crisis.  you are lost since you are out of your comfort zone.

+ yes. i am having my mid-age crisis (before my mid-age)

you will face the same problems no matter where you are(except hk).
will you have the gut to ask people in beijing  that they can speak cantonese or not.  i doubt it.

+ you are right. cantonese. or hong kong is a tiny place after all.

you believe assimilation,  you always question why you need to adopt western culture, not the other way around.   you asked why the white cannot have "dim sum" every day and you need to have donuts & coffee everyday.

+ i was trying to be poetic

but beside the white and the cantonese, have you consider the indian, taiwanese & japanese...  they may not like donuts, but they are ok with it.  western culture is a mutually inclusive thing for all people in canada.

i believe acculturation, i believe people are  exchange of cultural features in this global world.  of course, it is not a one day process, it takes time.  when i was taking the asian study class 10+ yrs ago, some white people can speak fluent mandarin and actually one of them got the scholarship and went to taiwan for his master degree.
just want to let you know white people are slowly adopting chinese culture as well.

i love both hk and canada.  I never think hk is bad.  i choose to stay in canada because canada is more suitable for me.  just like apple and orange, they are both good.  depend on which one you like.

i am a canadian chinese, so what wrong?  this is me.

why you are still in canada, it must be a reason to keep you here.
be positive thinking.  why you always think what you lost rather than what you have.  you sound like you are the global man who lost his identity .  dont' you believe you will face a similar situation when you change your career or partner.   who moved your cheese?
who are you?  who are you?  who are you?  this is what you need to find out.

+ thank you for your reply
