we got a Sharp portable A/C from costco down in the states i think 3 summers ago. i use it religiously during the summer in my room and so far it's been awesome still! =D it was i think $600. but every year the price goes down cuz it's becoming more and more popular.
how can you place the exhaust tube if the room's window is not a sliding one? I wanted to get one but I can't think of a way to put the tube at the window.
Fully Agree!! It's well worth the money! I had a portable one for over 8/9 years, and it's still working! My current home have Central AC, but I still use the portable one if I need to cool down the room more..! And I recently bought 1 more from Costco which is bucket free, and it has been running 24/7 for our work server room for over a few weeks now...!
Just make sure you get a bucket free model =D
I'm the opposite...I think an AC is well worth the price!
Buy one that's at least over 10000 BTU and "bucket free", which means you don't need to discard the water yourself, the water vapor comes out ...

I got a Danby brand from Costco. It is okay for small room with door to keep cool air in. Also, need sliding window to exhaust the hot air to outside. If you use sliding patio door, then make sure you have door stopper or a piece of wood to stop theft from opening it from outside. Anyway, I don't find portable AC is very useful. Also, quite noisy.
I have portable-air-con in my office and in my opinion it's not worth it. Whoever sitting by the Windows where the hot air went out would feel super hot. The temperature did not go down much.
