The GP is only good for determining whether there was anything serious (eg. broken / cracked bones and stuff). If the injury is purely soft-tissue based, GP are completely useless. They'll just tell you to take some rest, ice it, write you some pain killer (or ask you to take tylenol / Advil), etc.
To help soft tissue injuries recovery, your best bet is to go to see a physiotherapist. However, a large majority of physiotherapists are pretty useless too, in the sense that while they are generally reasonably good in determining the nature of your injury, their treatment methods are almost always limited to heat treatment, TENS, ultra-sound, and maybe laser. Speaking from personal (and family) experience, this type of treatment is only effective in helping you recover up to 50% or less, after which they are only effective as pain management / suppression, but does nothing in helping you recover.
The physiotherapist that I used to see (not seeing him anymore cuz I've pretty much recovered) and recommend to all my friends is Kelvin Tam at:
Kelvin Physiotherapy Clinic
Phone : (604) 873-8270
Fax: (604) 873-8250
Address : Suite 503 601 Broadway W Vancouver , BC , V5Z4C2
Kelvin is different from most other physiotherapists in the sense that in addition to the typical arsenal of physio treatment methods, his single most preferred way to treat his patients are to use his hands. Again, speaking from personal experience and based on what my family and friends have told me after seeing him, this type of treatment is significantly more effective in helping you recover (not just manage pain). According to Kelvin, his style of physio treatment are not 100% effective on every patient either, but myself and everyone that I've referred to see Kelvin have pretty much recovered from their injuries.
The down side of seeing Kelvin is that he is not cheap -- I think he is charging $55/session now, and that his area is super difficult to find parking. But give Kelvin a call. I have seen a LOT of physiotherapists over the course of my various sports injuries (probably 10+ physiotherapists), and I will definitely say Kelvin is best one out of them all.
Hope you'll recover soon la.
