According to the Canadian Ski Council, BC has the lowest rate of helmet-use in Canada, at 66 per cent.

Dr. Shelina Babul with Preventable.ca says skiers should also pay attention to how it fits. "Don't just wear your gear, wear it correctly. If you're going to wear a helmet, and we really encourage you to wear a helmet, wear it correctly. Ensure that it's a snug fit and ensure that it's a certified helmet."

She says, "Sprained ankles and sprained wrists, broken hands, broken feet, you can heal those, but a head injury, it could be detrimental and you can prevent that from occurring by simply wearing a helmet. It will save your life."

Babul points out sprained ankles and wrists can be repaired, but the same can't be said for head injuries. She says you may be a very skilled skier or snowboarder, but all it takes is a split second to injure yourself or others around you.

Babul and others at Preventable.ca will be at the Big White and Silver Star over the next two weeks to talk about helmet safety.
