VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - Will Vancouver's new long term transportation plan be a help or a headache for people commuting from the suburbs? It looks like the city isn't planning on accommodating more cars.
The city says fewer people are driving into Vancouver now, and car trips are down by about thirty per cent in the city itself. So, the plan will include wider sidewalks, narrower streets, cycling and transit.
City engineer Jerry Dobrovolny believes any increase in traffic caused by the widening of Highway One and new Port Mann and Pattullo Bridges will be offset by better transit.
"Providing capacity for light rail one day, and also in the short term, providing options for buses."
"One of the challenges we face is how we integrate our plans with not only TransLink's plans and regional plans. That is the key. There are different needs," adds Dobrovolny.
Vancouver will be getting feedback from the public between now and mid-July.
The city will spend $25 million over the next two years to create 55 kilometres of bike lanes to make Vancouver of the most bike friendly cities in North America.
