IMO nope. Market driving consumers towards certain directions doesn't always mean that the consumer is heading the "right" direction. Best example is: Black 12" vinyl to CD....back in the late 80s, most major music reviewers declared "vinyl is dead, all hail CD" or similar.Guess what: now (2009), new vinyl still comes out of the factories, turntables (higher quality ones, no mid/low end Japanese) are still being made and Ortofon is still actively in the business making cartridge (and business model still profitable).

LCD TV has a harder image and poor rendition of shades of colur when compared to CRT.
While the viewing angle and brightness is now almost on par with CRT, I would still stay true to CRT until I cannot buy no more.
Plasma will soon join CRT as more as manufacturers getting out of this technology. Technically, LCD last longer and won't have burn in. Plasma is generally having better colour.
IIRC, LCDs have a much longer service life than plasma tv, but plasma tvs tend to give richer colours than LCDs.
When you are deciding between one tv or another, an important thing to keep in mind is your viewing distance at home. Most of the time, pixel peeping will reveal what seems to be a major difference. But when you move back a few steps, that difference would likely be less obvious. Then you gotta ask yourself this -- is the price premium worthwhile when you are watching the tv at your normal distance?

FYI:
LCD also suffers from "burn in" just like plasma or CRT, and it's very difficult to get rid of.
What's more? LCD relies on a high voltage gas discharge tube as backlight and they too, have limited service life (typically 3~60,000hrs, with most of them around 45,000hrs typical).
How about the LED backlit LCD TV?

If you buy LCD, get at least 120Hz. You will notice a big difference in fast moving images like sports or action movies. From 120Hz to 240Hz, it's not as noticeable, you'll have to decide whether you want to spend the big bucks for 240.
LED backlighting has several advantages over flourescent - less power, better red and green hues for more natural, life-like picture quality, the most important advantage of LED is better contrast and darker blacks which closes the gap between LCD and Plasma.
