How do you erase hard drive data before return?

How do you erase all data safely before returning your drive for RMA?

If your drive is working, Darik's Boot n Nuke works great.

If you drive is not working, and you have something confidential, then don't RMA it. The cost of your privacy exceed the cost of a new drive.

Since the manufacturers receives tons of HDD a day and they all get sent out for refurbishment, I really don't think anyone will bother to look through the drive.

Completely agree with this.

For personal / small business use, drives are cheap nowadays anyway. $80 will buy you a brand new 2TB HDD. Is your confidentiality worth more than $80?

You be the judge la.

I still don't recommend anything over 1TB as anything larger will be like 4+ platters drive. They create more noise, heat and generally not as stable compare to single platter 320GB, 500GB or 1TB.

I discovered the problem when backing up with Seagate's DiscWizard. It said it couldn't read the sectors. I checked with WD software as it is a WD drive. There are problems with some sectors. How about using WD's software to fix the problem sectors?

When sectors have gone bad in a hard drive, there really isn't anything you can do -- the WD software doesn't really fix the problem either. All it really does is to mark those sectors off in the MFT as "bad sectors" and the firmware on the hard drive will no longer write data to that section in the future.

But the thing is, when sectors start to go bad on a hard drive, a lot of times it is the first signs of imminent hard drive failure. If I were in your shoes, I'd just get a new HDD for the computer, and simple use this partially problematic drive as a scrap disk -- say for BT, video storage (that you won't mind losing), etc.

要壞 drive 就 low level format 都救唔返㗎啦。聽你條廢柴講、唔見晒啲 data 就真係俾你害死。
