VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - Within days, work to demolish the old wharf at Jericho Beach will begin.

It's a sad time for those who fought to keep the military landmark.

The fate of the Jericho Wharf has been debated for years at the Vancouver Park Board.

Earlier this month, the board sealed the wharf's fate by awarding the demolition contract.

Gary Wedeking is one of a number of people who feel the wharf is important to Vancouver's heritage.

"It's one of the few operational features in Vancouver left over from the war in the Pacific," he says. "That's where the seaplanes went out to patrol the coast."

He feels it also adds to the beauty of the shores.

"It's part of a walk that is as beautiful as any walk in Vancouver, even counting the Stanley Park seawall."

But the wharf was deemed a hazard to fish and sailors.

The park board has decided, instead, to upgrade the beach. The demolition is expected to be finished in the fall
