I moved to this house few month ago, today I got the hydro bill was $700!! We change all the appliances to energy star, use cfl light bulbs....anyone have these problems?
when did you register your account with BC hydro? are you on smartmeter already?
There's no way you can get 700bux for 2 months, that's like 700bux on 60 days, works out to over 10.3 bux/day. What that typically equates to is about 100kW/hr (tier-2 rate) in 24 hrs, or 4.2kW/hr of usage continuously.
2 things you can do: (1) call them to verify the meter readings; (2) you personally check to see if there' s any parasitic power draw (get a KillaWatt from internet to measure the power consumption of your home appliances) (3) if you have rental properties, check to see if they are running grow-ops.
Personally, I do not see any possibility of you using 4kW/hr (that's 4,000watts per hour, you know!!!)
To give you an example: a family of 4, hot water heater tank and hydronic heating on natural gas, I typically use approx. 17kW/day avg, or 700watts/hr typically, that includes 3 laundry runs a week, home cooking, etc.
Sounds like you have huge house

Haha....之前間屋3500呎加埋所有gas,cable都唔駛咁貴!宜家搬到2000呎唔夠嘅屋要成700電費,你話嬲唔嬲!
So do you guys think that I need to paid the bill first then argue with bc hydro? Actually, I called them today, they said I need to checked the meter first....haha....I really don't know how to check lor....like turn on an appliance and see wor....or we can ask hydro to hire 3rd party to check the meter.....wtf.....
In all fairness: you shall call them to coordinate with a meter reading, you don't have the authority to call on a third party to verify your meter readings in this case (if memory serves)...
When calling them, make sure you get the guy/gal's name when they pick up the phone, so as to keep track of them. Some of them lazy ass would give you a lazy response just to brush you off their shoulders, so by taking down their names, that would raise their awareness that you might report to their supervisor if disputes arise, or you aren't very happy with their attitudes, etc.
My house is 2000sqft as well, and I get an average bill for the given house size/activity.
Is the second bill la, the first one is normal , we still renovate the basement...you think the tools of renovation use a lot ?coz the first bill was mainly use for renovation (around $150), this bill is still ridiculous
renovation equipment such as drills (mostly on cordless nowadays anyways), etc. rarely use 4000watts/hr.
Check all your electric heater to see if they have been unintentionally/intentionally left on, or due to faulty thermostat settings or something like that.
My friend's parent experienced similar issues (abeit less though, around 280/2 mnths) since he and his brother moved out of an old, 45yr old 1600sq ft house (mainly natural gas heating)......after much investigation (*by my friend of course, I'm his technical advisor), they found their parent's bedroom has a wall-base electric heater left on at all times (without even knowing)....so once that turned off, electricity bill plummetted to around 80/2mnths
