Nexus application interviews, beginning, charged, process, usually

Question about Nexus application process. I filled in the paper form and sent in my application via snail mail.
I didn't expect to hear from them but I just found out that they charged my credit card $50 last week.

Do they charge at the beginning or end of the application process? I have missed a few phone calls since...
Do they usually call to setup interviews? What is the wait time for the application?

I thought the application is online I don't know we can do it by paper!

I can't use the online application because I had a Nexus pass years ago.
To use the online system, I need to enter my old Nexus number. BUT back then, there were NO numbers given with the card...
So I didn't have the option to use the online application cos I was stuck at that screen asking for the number.

I don't remember when they charge the money on my card.  But our friends mentioned the same thing that they charged them right away at the beginning.

It is a fee to process the application regardless if you pass or fail the check. It means it is before..

I just applied to renew my Nexus and they charge right away...so it should be the same for apply as well...

yes, at least for my case, mine was a brand new application, they charged online
