Not necessary.
My son grew up in Van South, he graduated top honour at David Thomson,
got 20K scholarship for UBC. He did not get any help from anyone. He is sporty
and not a geek. It really depends on the individual and how they set their goal.
We have a school behind our house, and our kid and can walk 2 min to school (don't even need to cross street). But enrollment is so low, now students are put in mix classes which I total against.
So I have to bus my kids anyway, so just try to find a better choice. Anecdotal evidence told me "cheap" private school kids (St. Francis Xavier/Vancouver Christian School) are pretty smart. I also see some smart kids in French immersion schools.
I am just looking for the biggest bang for my buck and time. And hope the kid will do better than the parents (at least not living E. Van)

Now is a difference time. VSB is really short charging poor neighborhood schools. Say mixed class totally sucks. I just found out they teach the SAME material to 2 difference grade (although they are difference learning goals). But basically your kid listening to the same things for 2 yr in a row. (except math).
