Last year went back for 10 days (CNY)
The woman asked me some very non-sense questions
(I am a Canadian)

She asked me: where did you go?
(I thought she saw my boarding-pass? 仲要問?)

I told her "HK" ...

It's just some tactics they use to question suspicious people because you were going to HK for a short period and by youself I guess?

They want to ask more question to see if you're lying so they deliberately repeat and ask "stupid" questions.  Just answer them, don't talk back, or else you'll be in trouble!

I'm kinda worry about the custom too, like I didn't go back to Canada for almost 2 years, and I'm planning to go back maybe this summer.  2 years is a pretty long time, so I'm afraid they will ask so tons of questions.... Well i'm working HK, and I did have my accountant in Canada to help me report my income in HK, and I did pay tax to Canada's gov't.  So just wondering, should I say the truth ne? I'm afraid they'll ask more and more.... PLUS, about that $750 limit,,, for sure over it la,, dunno if they'll open my lugage to check tim.... so scare...
My friends and family always said Canada D custom make you have a bad impression, first person you see when you arrive Canada, and they're being so cool and 'black face',, even you're just a visitor.... Sometime i really wanna complaint ne, it's okay for them to ask question, but they can ask it in a friendly way, or at least have some smile lor...

Haha....smile on their faces when they're working...I don't think so...

Not saying everyone is like that but I only saw laid back, bad attitude government workers in all these years.  No matter where you go government workers are all the same...especially in the immagration and customs department.  However, I respect fire fighters the most.

Just tell the truth and don't hide anything.  Nothing to be scared/worried about if you tell the truth.

If you haven't come back for 2 years, you're non-resident already if you don't have any dependent, real estate property, bank account, care card here. You don't really have to declare it under the tax law. Any one live outside Canada for more than half year and have no direct link to Canada while you're away, you can consider yourself as non-resident.

If this is your case, just tell them you come back to visit parents, relatives. However, if you consider yourself as non-resident, you won't have the $750 tax free credit. You are just treated as vistor. THat is, any gifts over $60 are taxable.

i havn't declare non-resident yet....  and still have bank account in canada...  so does that means i gotta pay income tax in canada?  if thats the case, whats the best way to avoid that?  no way in hell i'm paying income tax in canada when i dont even live there, the only reason i go back to hk is to avoid the stupid high tax.  if i gotta pay then over 200k of my income will end up in the government of canada... no way
and HK only wants about 50-60k with pretty good tax return this year!

There is nothing to be afraid of. If you have already report everything properly (filing your oversea incoming to revenue canada) you can just tell them the truth. Customs are trainned to read ppl if they are lieing. (expression, body language, consistance of your answers...etc) Repeating "stupid" questions are just one of the technique.

If you bring anything back more than the $750 limit, just declare them! Most of the time, they will only tax GST/PST on them and it's not that much. Then, you have nothing to be afraid of even if they ask you to open up your luggages. (well unless you sumgle illegal things)
Good luck! Just be honest! I think it's totally worth it to pay small amount of tax and get "peace" of your mind.

Yes you have to if you are still a Canadian and still live in Canada. And if you have half a million, 1 you cannot travel with that much cash. 2 you have enough $ to hire a good accountant to do your tax in a smarter way.
