Whoever takes up the Liberal helm at this point is only gonna be another lame duck and temporary stand in. Rae will just be another relic from the eras bygone, and factions within the Liberals may still not like/support him despite Dion and Ignatieff's demise. Until Justin Trudeau truly comes of age, no one in the Liberals is charismatic enough to rally all their supporter under the red banner. The risk here is, is Justin Trudeau capable enough to be the real deal, or is just another dud with more hype than capability?

IMO, a merger with the NDP will only result in short term gains and long term losses. The Liberal Party of Canada has had a 100 year's worth of pedigree since the days of our nation's forefathers. If they were to merge with the NDP, could they even keep the Liberal name? Is LDP (Liberal Democratic Party) gonna sound right? Are they just going to merge party colours of red and orange to an orangey red? The NDP is not going to accept retaining only the Liberals name because at this point, the word "Liberal" is damaged goods. Most importantly, "merging" with the NDP right now will simply mean that the Liberals are gonna get swallowed, meat, bones, and all. The 100 year banner that once flew so high and proud will be no more.
Of course, I am not saying parties need to live on forever. The Conservatives were once Liberal-Conservatives, and then Progressive Conservatives, the split to PC and Reform Party / Canadian Alliance, etc. But for a party with such long history to go the way of the dinosaurs, it would be a little sad.
