I don't think a gun will make drunken people back off.

I think a win for the authorities here is to minimize casualty first, and economic cost 2nd. I don't think putting a bullet in someone's head will minimize the casualty department overall. It might either make the crowd charge at the police, then it will force lethal forces. The death toll definatley will be in the double digit of that happened. I'd consider that a major fail of the authorities in that case.

I think it's not too bad now. It's handled okay because the police observed reservation intead of aggression. Could've done better, but definately no where near worst case scenario. 150~ injuries and 1 serious injury. Very few reports of actual police brutality. 0 confirm deaths.

Vancouver Police didn't do their job.  This happened in 1994, and in other major sport events.  http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/blogs/abraham/detail?entry_id=66130 They knew damn well this can happen,but they didn't prepare for it.  At least during Olympics there were camera to monitor the street. Now they are asking people to upload photo and video clip to youtube.  This is totally lame.
