ok, maybe you guys are right, people react less but that doesn't mean we don't think it is a big deal or we don't care. Usually, big cases like you've mention got newspaper or TV criticize on it already, it is by default that people know how important or how bad it is. But kids killing cat doesn't happen that often and many people don't think it is a BIG DEAL, so we have to express our feeling about it and let people know it is a BIG DEAL.
I can't agree with "compared to human murder...this is nothing!". Maybe you are not a cat owner, and you won't know how it will feeling when your cat got 亂棍打死 by 10 kids. That cat is a random cat, that means it can happen on any cat any time and it is totally different from a human murder case.
let's just say human murder starts with animal murder sin lor.... it's how you educate your kids before the grow up into adults that dump their own child out the window.

It's an adult cat, not a kitten, but that doesn't really matter...
Anyway, that was just one example, is it really important that those who were puzzled by "why so big of a deal" need to reply to the snowstorm thread first before saying "why so big of a deal" to this cat killing? If yes, then I apologize, I didn't even notice that thread until now, after I did a search for snowstorm, because it got zero reply so it's hidding somewhere at the bottom of the pile.
I understand how you pet lovers feel. I have pets before and watching them die is sad. However, they're still animals.

I don't know what the cat killers believe cuz I'm not them I can't say as certain as you can, maybe you can read minds? But I'm sure what they did is wrong even the cat is just an animal. As I said before, animals are still living creatures and they're not worthless. You can't kill them for fun! However, in another scenario, if you're stuck on an island and without any kind of food except you have your pet dog. Will you eat it and survive or you'd rather hunger to death?
It's interesting that how people value animals. Cute and adorable ones, they love and protect, how about the ugly ones? Aren't they animals too? If this cat killing case was raccoon killing instead, do you think people will feel as bad?

To make the scenario more extreme, if your dog is one of those big dogs, when both of you got hungry, u may not eat it, but it may eat u LOL
