The ironic thing is, Ultrabook was out in the market many many years ago. They were called sub-notebook back then and I had the Sony UX280, and it was the best "small" computer I ever had.. imagine 800x600 res on a 4" touch screen! The Toshiba Libretto, oh.. that's another beauty I wanted to own.
"Ultrabook" is a name owned by Intel so it is merely just another marketing scheme by them. Nothing new and exciting about it.
I deal/service these hardware everyday, with all the competition going on... Apple was able to build these guys so much better for the same $$$.
I use a Macbook Air, Toshiba Z830 and Sony Z212 at work, and I feel like I will break the Z830 or Z212 just because I squezze the screen too hard. I have been using the 11" MBA running bootcamp on it, it is speedy for everything except it runs a bit too hot.
Bear in mind that in CES, EVERYONE is trying hard to mimic the Apple products. We can't deny that Apple makes some amazing products that the market is using them as benchmark whether we like it or not.
Out of the Ultrabook I've worked on and using... My rank are:
- Apple Macbook Air - sturdy build, excellent display, long battery life.
- Sony Z212 - sturdy, rubbery business feel, high-res screen, include ext GPU+DVD.
- Samsung Series 9 - Clone of the Macbook Air, solidly build, little flexes
- Asus UX21 series - Good well rounded spec, nothing too exciting.
- Toshiba Z830 - Lots of connectivity, good price
- Acer S3 - Cheap piece of junk!
