I have a diff. Opinion.
I like Paul's picture better. For the other picture is technically more difficult, and it's more art like than the one with Paul & Athena. But if those are picture for myseff to keep, then I don't to turn myself into just a piece of art.
To judge whether a photo is "good" or not is somehow subjective. We can't and shouldn't compare a piece of "art" to an average photo. To me, I definitely like Paul's one cuz I can see the love between the couple, the guy is protecting and loving the gal, and the gal is being hugged and loved in the guy's arm. I consider it a romantic and intimate photo that successfully shows their love.
However, that "art" piece is totally a different impression to me. It's like the gal being kidnapped and being raped, the guy is trying to rape her. I can't see any smile on the gal's face and I can't see any love relationship between them. But of course, it depends on what message the photographer intended to tell.
Talk about technical photographic issues, I think both lighting setups were simple. The "art" piece isn't any better or more complicated than Paul's one, they're just different.
I like this pic...!!! May be I am not that high level to feel what "Happy Cowboy" feel...but at least this pic can show us sweet, comfort, long lasting, good faith...etc feeling!!! Sorry I am just that low level!!!!
These iconic images are somewhat based on luck and are about being at the right time with the right person. Being Avedon helps, but it's not a guarantee. For us, I am more than ok with Paul photo.
