I bought a sony camcorder (HDRTG1) just for my trip to the stats couple of months ago. I especially use it to shoot l.v. free shows. Now I bring it with me and I usually just shoot the street scene.
good:
1. it is pretty small and can be turn on on the fly.
2. i like its quality.
bad:
1. it uses memory sticks so I need to buy extra one just in case.
2. it saves the movie as its own format and you need to use its own software to open or convert to other format.
Not sure what you mean, but my camera would be able to record 640 @ 30fps or 1024 @ 15fps for at least an hour if not hours..?
There are actually many benifit to use a camcorder over a regular DC. I ended up using the DC more because it takes very little time to get it started: It probably takes 2-3 secs for me to get it start taking pictures or videos after I pick it up. It's very responsive. The battery also last long, and it uses a very common Canon rechargable battery!
Also, you would want to get a camera that has a tripod mount, so that you can record video while you are playing with your baby =D
BTW, you are going to have a lot less time of your own with a baby, video that a saved through the G9 is in avi format which can be posted online, or archive right away. All you need to do is copy it off your memory to your computer just like the jpgs images..!

Good thing for Canada is .. you can buy, try, refund or exchange .. ( even 90 day if from costco .. but usually 30 days )
To us, end up I got the S2000 for as the all purpose DC/cam recorder after trying the G10 and LX3 .. the S2000 is not pocket size, (however, it is light) but it is for my wife to use anyway, either stay home, or go out with ah big diaper bag anyway .. it offers good zoom, good movie .. OK pic quality ... plus 15 times zoom if needed .. and most important ... half the price compare to G10 or LX3 .. (which cost more then the Sony A300 kit!!)
Another suggestion for a real pocket size DC (with movie function) is the F200 .. I dont hv the F200, but the F100, which already offer same or better IQ compare to G10/LX3, but the new F200, suppose to be better overall.
Put it this way .. if that is your baby .. it doesn't really matter which camera .. you will enjoy to take picture/movie.
Ha ha .. as rick rick say .. I am almost NOT taking anymore movie after the first week ... bt at least, I want to take some movie .. about his grow .. and can show to his grand parents in HK .. ^_^
This is what I mean!! When you have a baby, you need something that's quick and easy with decent quality, and best do eveyrthing you wanna to do.
At time, you want to take pictures and record videos, and it's not easy to handle a video camcorder and a camera at the same time. So, you will end up having to have to pick one.
Also playback capability on a good/large LCD would be a good idea. You will be surprise who much your toddler would enjoy viewing him/herself in both photo and video form. =D

Back to MJJ's question, I think I will buy camcorder if I have kid. I can still take still picture with camcorder... And capture kids movement all the time!
That is Canon recall .. as long as your friend's G10 is a "HONG" product .. that is ok ..
And as EL said .. speed is important for baby/kid portrait .. most DC are too slow .. ( but for movie is ok ) G10 is not bad for speed .. but not DSLR ..
Well .. if budget and size is allowed .. still suggest DSLR .. S2000 .. for just $259 .. even just it's HD functiion .. not bad gum la.. ^_^
IMHO, no DC is good enough w/o the capability mount an external flash. When I get a chance I'll take a picture with my G9 with the external and w/o show that you know what I mean..!
