if you don't have time, don't invest.
otherwise, good luck getting burned

I grin everytime I see someone who doesn't know anything about stocks and loses money in the market

The fees you pay to "financial advisors" are for their time to entertain you, not their "expertise" on stockpicking or portfolio management.

as a normal person, unless you are a full-time trader, who will have time to do all these after working for a full-time job, taking care of a family & socializing with friends.  if really no time, don't invest, i beleive 90% of the people need to get out of the market.
you should start a post and ask for good adviser recommendation , just like those one whose haven't find a good doctor, bodyshop or photographer yet.  there are good/bad people out there, no matter where do they work.

May I ask what kind of qualities would you look for in an advisor? What type of advisors would you recommend to others?

And you don't need to spend a lot of time on monitoring the market.
An hour a week is enough.

I just spend that one hour on some weekly magazines

I spend the rest of my time polishing my investment strategies, not necessarily related to the general market.  Pretty much things that you can learn anytime.

I don't read financial statements.  I don't spend more than 3 mins before I invest in a stock.

Everyone's strategy is different and heavily biased. Therefore I suggest to go see different advisors so that you can decide who works for you. There are many fantasy stock market games that you can sign up and try before you fork out your real money.

I trade with Questrade for those who like to know because I make less than 4 trades a week and the fee is only $10 a pop.

Honestly, I spend less than 1 hour a week trading because I have a "personal broker/agent" who will keep me updated to the second with what's going on. She is quite affordable.. hahaha... (she is most likely going to kill me if I say too much here). I spent about 1 hour on top to review all the reports that she gives me, so we can revise our strategy. Investing requires a lot of research.

FA's are sales. Don't get fooled by their titles. You will find all the people with fancy titles at the banks. Think about it. If they can make good money in the market, why would they help you for so little fees or no fee? OL

They make a lot (100k+ a year) from trailers, commissions, perks from fund companies..
