Why wait? There is always something new. Just buy now if you need it. Even if you do not watch Fairchild, you should buy for watching movies. Fairchild does not even have HD yet.

Even LED backlight has high and low end. There are edge-lit and RGB. Most high-end TVs like the Sony XBR use Dynamic RGB for more controls over colors/brightness.

If you are in a market to buy a LCD TV, and depends on your budget, you should be looking into:

- More HDMI are better
- PC Connection if supported
- ATSC tuner (not quite useful now)
- 120Hz motion
- Energy consumption

Things like resolution, contrast ratios are no longer important because they are all dynamically adjusted by the engine.

If you can afford a high-end one, the Sony Z, XBR series are excellent. If you are on a budget, Vizio is the brand that come up in the last few years for those budget minded. Vizio is selling some really nice set now at Costco and they are priced very well. I was tempted to get one just for PS3. Samsung would be the next below Sony.

Plasma is cheap and has better picture than LCD.  The latest Plasmas have improved a lot from a few years ago so they last longer and less burn in problems.  However, they're heavy, high operating temperature (think 35 degrees summer) and consumes more power.

TOP

Phillip you are right....Plasma is definitely HEAVY...it's about 90lb for my 42" Plasma. And it almost crank my IKEA TV stand. Luckily I notice the bent and remove the wheel....
Otherwise... >_<

The reason I choose Plasma that time is that the place I put my TV would be quite bright most of the time. And plasma is "brighter" than LCD...

Plasma is definitely much cheaper than LCD now, you can get a really nice Panasonic 46" for the price you normally would pay for a 37" LCD. It is also brighter and more vivid, but I doubt plasma will be in the market as the demands are shifting to LCD these years.

LCD should be 'brighter' for a brightly lighted room
