You have to make sure you are strong enough that they won't easily over-power you. If they can easily grab the pepper spray (or any other weapon) from you, they will use it on you.

Well.. you will want to piss them off so they will leave you alone, but you won't want to "give" them something that might hurt you.

If you have a knife... you will probably be shaking at that time, they will easily take the knife from you and use it on you.

However, if you have a personal alarm, you will piss them off, they cannot use it to hurt you, and they will probably leave you and find another target.
