Personally, I like the G9 better because of it has some extra video features, + more in the telephoto ends.  For wide angle, nothing beat my 12-24mm on my full frame DSLR =P

My friend got a Canon Powershot G10 recently and just notice that there is a service recall for certain batch...

EL,

I reason I was consider G10 ..   is the flash ..   however.. once external flash is added .. it is just bigger and bigger ..  lol   ( new 270 EX may help )

What impress me is ..  I am always a big fan for external flash ...  however, those new entry DSLR .. such as 450D, D60 .. even Sony .. their built in flash is very nice!  ( no matter WB, output ... and u can fine tune it)

i took a ton of video for my son using the G7.  it's a lot more handy than getting the camcorder ...

but for pics ... even the G7 is just too slow for capture children movement.

i suggest you buy a canon sx1 is  or canon sx
or a canon sx10 is..  for sale at broadway camera 2008 boxing day  $350
these 2 are standards,

you can buy cheaper  similar ones with less features
i would look for  a camera that could shoot high def video
and a variable angle screen  that can flip forward and back ward

MJJ ..   nowadays ..  I think most people will go for DC with movie function ..

I didn't read all the post .. how about DSLR?  would you consider? say a 500D isn't that heavy at all, and you can use external flash ..  then no worry for 閃親 BB when you use bounce flash. ( I know you want a ligther body .. but trust me .. with new born baby ..  with car seats / stroller ..  diaper ..  milk .. bottle ..  diaper bag .. and the weight of the baby ..  easy .. you are carrying 50lbs + stuffs ..  so 1 or 2 lbs more ..  not much of a different.

If you really want small and light ... then whatever DC works .. and most Canon DC offer good movie function and can zoom while taking movie ..

Back to G10 ..  you can add the 270EX flash ..  it is still light .. and you can do bounce.

^_^

Trust me .. you wont have time to think / play too much on pic/movie .. etc when you have the new born ..  LOL

CP, I have to trust you as you are the one with the latest "daddy" experience~
For the G10, is there any one with similar quality which is lighter?

for today's babies,
high def video is a must
you dont need a camcorder, because you are shoot shot clips, but a hockey game

but a  Canon PowerShot SX1 IS is too expensive

read up on its specs, and find a cheaper camera that will do roughly the same job
probably a sony

cnet review of canon sx1
The SX1 IS is a great camera for those who don't want the bulk of an SLR but desire the flexibility of different shooting modes and customisable options, with a long lens. The inclusion of (good quality) HD-video recording just makes the package even more appealing, and we would wholeheartedly recommend this camera for anyone who is looking for a camera that can — almost — do it all.

if budget is not a concern, go for the Leica D-LUX 4

MAX ISO 6400, F2 should be good in low light environment
VIDEO HD 1280 x 720 @ 24 fps

For such a particular purpose, I have some personal opinion as below.
- (Please correct me if I am wrong) I think all digital cameras have a life time ("actuation"), no matter point & shoot or DSLR. If you're (or your wife is) going to take quite a few shoots per day even in a casual manner, the accumulated actuation annually might be even more than some not-too-many-jobs professionals. ie., you don't need a DSLR.
- Having the above concern, you can buy a new a-lot-cheaper point & shoot from time to time.
- A lot of point & shoot DC nowadays can handle pretty reasonably good video recording too. Especially it's only for your personal purpose.
- You may consider a more handy DC, that it's not a "burden" for you (or your wife) to carry along anywhere and anytime you go with your bb. And more importantly, in case you find anything interesting that may happen in a lightening flash, you are able to pull out your camera from your pocket/bag to capture the precious moment in time.
- I found somehow the built-in flash on most Canon small DC is much "stronger" or "not friendly" compare to Sony ones. And for the "immediate reaction after pressing the shutter button" (time lapse) is more apparent on most Canon than on Sony. And that's why I got a Sony T-700 some time ago even I like the Canon brand better.
- It's always better to have at least two memory cards/sticks instead of one (even larger memory). For example, especially while you're transferring files from one card to your computer via a card reader, you still have a second card inside the camera in case you want to shoot something interesting at the transferring period of time.
- When you say it's for your wife (mainly) and I will take your word seriously and assuming that she is totally not a technical person to handle this kind of gadget. I won't bother much about any non-necessary tools such as an external flash. Knowing that the purpose and intention and satisfaction of taking pics of a beloved baby by a passionate parent is way different from a professional photographer taking pics for a client. A parent won't concern much about what what technical stuff like depth of field, a little out of focus, a little over or under exposed... etc, all you need is to see your baby in the picture! So don't let any unnecessary burdens to encumber your enjoyment of shooting your bb.
Just my two cents.
