The ethnic Chinese in Taiwan/Singapore/Malaysia have been using Mandarin for a long time.
Singapore and Malaysia also decided to adopt the simplified characters. China didn't force them at all.

it's only strange because you learned trad chinese first
people who learned simp chinese since they were born have no problem with it

I think you missed the point.  Yes, with simplifying Chinese characters, we *may* write faster and it *may* be easier to learn.  But unlike 草書, which complement the language, 殘體字 is a replacement and is an arbitrary change on the language.  Remember, it is *illegal* to use 正字 in red China.

Language is not only for communication, it is also a cultural artifact.  Our culture and history are also destroyed as well.

In English, for example, you will never use web phases in any formal business communication or academic write up no matter how popular or efficient they are.

LOL started out as a web language and is now considered a formal word.

I agree that certain history and culture is lost when you replace trad Chinese with simp Chinese but from a communication perspective it makes ABSOLUTELY NO DIFFERENCE which type of writing is used as long as that person has been using it since the first day.

I believe UBC's Mandarin program has switched to simplified characters.
