Not all photos need to be in a bell curve shape. In fact, photos with bell shape are *usually* boring. If this photo is a bell shape, it will be very overexposed. That's why most photos taken with auto exposure look bad as the camera tries to protect highlights and everything into a bell shape.
This picture has a good exposure. The baby and father is at the entery of store front, therefore closer to the light. Your are an engineer, you must understand better the inverse square law than most of us here. The light difference between the background and the subject makes the subjects pop more. Cowboy made a decision to expo for the baby, and let the background darker to draw viewers eye to the subject.
That's the reason photography lesson no. 1 is "White on White, Black on Black, White on Black and Black on White.
That's also why I don't care much for the matrix exposure or auto exposure on cameras, it is hard to program aesthetics into cameras. |
