I'm on a university exchange at Hong Kong right now. I think life is much better in Vancouver (unless you are super rich).
Everything here requires "connections" and often not based on merit (ie. someone totally clueless or lack any skills get the job over people who knows their stuff)
The difference between Vancouver and Hong Kong is the sense of community. Throughout my volunteer experiences I feel the community is more accommodating to the individual in Vancouver, benefits for both the community and self. But in Hong Kong, you either don't do free work without money or they expect you to donate your soul when providing volunteering labour.
For example, if you are a youth protestor in HK and is not Long Hair, you are considered naive and sometimes innocent. Elders would laugh at you, but in Western society people seem to be more tolerant of a dissident's opinion. This is the sense of community I refer to. Society in HK have huge expectation of the individual, fame and wealth is deified by the tabloid media.
true, i think the responsibility of caring the elderly could hold back the youngster to move on
it could be a good and bad...good: 有孝心,負家庭責任, bad: could delay plans for advancing (not only career, could including getting married, etc...)..世上無難事,只怕有心人
