I think the exposure diff is more due to skin tones, the baby just has lighter skin from I can see.  You can't have a black background in weddings? I am not getting this one.

Ascough's images trend to have a very heavy processed look, but he does give good example how to work the light.

I don't see high contrast light/dark background is a failure.

I think by failure he meant that it's not the typical look that your client might be looking for.  Deep shadow / high contrast look is an acquired taste, so to speak. Not everyone has the same preference. For paid assignments, all it matters is what your client wants.

Guess people paid for photography doesn't seem to have same taste as photographers.

Wife just spent $40 to buy kid's school photos.  2 hard/front light (don't know it actually give any exposure  value except to give 2 catch lights on each eye), soft, flat, bad color, printed at bestbuy. But mom thinks they are the best pictures ever.

Most of the thing we care is bs.  I think I just quite photography.

Let's say that people who get paid for photography do not necessarily produce the best products. However, they are successful because they produce stuff that their clients are happy about.

I don't do paid assignments so this is irrelevant to me.

My motivation is to do something that's different from what others do but at the same time appeals to me personally.

Take the comicon convention for example.  There were probably 200 photographers there? But I didn't see anyone who worked the same way as I did.

I try not to say more, as I understand happycow is shooting film and this is what he wants  I think it's all good =D  What fun it is if we take picture for what people like, instead of what we like.

Yet, isn't that fun to have some meaningful photography discussion on LYK from time to time =P

I stopped doing wedding starting last year, and sold my 2 DSLR and waited for the 5dm3.  I can finally go out and shoot again freely.  Provided that I don't have to spend all my time with my kids. =P
