In the first 15+ years of the past 30 years, I'd say China received more benefits through HK than HK did from China. For the longest time, HK was China's portal to the international world. To the entire southeast China region, HK was paramount to their growth and numerous other aspects in life. Back in late 70's up to at least the mid 80's, I remember my grandparents and uncles frequently having trips up to GZ and the nearby villages to visit relatives and such. Every time they went, they were hauling up stockpiles of stuff (clothes, food, snacks, tv's, fridges, radios, cassettes, books/magazines, etc.) as gifts or just things people asked them to buy for them from HK. And it wasn't just my family -- a lot of people with relatives in GZ were doing exactly the same thing at the time.
Additionally, it wouldn't be too far off to say that the influx of pretty much the entire manufacturing industry in southeaster China grew because of HK investors. HK folks were moving their factories en masse to various regions in SZ, DG, etc., and the resulting economic growth was both staggering and paramount for the growing China at the time. Because of the manufacturing prowess, the Guangdong province provided a dis-proportionally large share of the country's economic activities. Of course, you can say that the HK businessmen and investors made their buckets of gold as well, and you'd be right. But I'd say the overall benefits to China from the manufacturing sector was far larger than what the HK businessmen got.
As China grew, the balance of contributor / beneficiary gradually started to shift. In the last 10 years or so, China was definitely helping HK out when it needed the most help (SARS, AFC, etc.). For that, HK was certainly grateful for China's support. But at the same time, Grandfather is also increasing trying to control HK and bend HK to follow Grandfather's wishes. And that is what HK gets for helping Grandfather in those early years?!
