I get these calls too..actually everyone in my family got a call within hours of each other. I think they just try random numbers? They are calling from Macau and they will tell you that you've won a trip to macau to see some awards ceremony with Jackie Chan and stuff...haha..and they will provide you with airfare and hotel. I always tell them I'm not interested. And they always start with " do you speak mandarin?". If you say no, they hang up.
if they try random numbers then they must be very aggressive. coz i live in a place that has very few chinese (not in BC, nor Ontario). and i got it once. that woman asked me if i speak chinese. i said yes. then she started speaking to me in Mandarin. I haven't heard anyone speaking Mandarin for more than a year, so my Mandarin is no longer good enough to understand what she's talking about. only heard sth like survey. so i said in English that I speak Cantonese. then that woman kept asking if I speak Chinese. I said I speak Cantonese. she doens't seem to understand English and just kept asking if I speak Chinese. (isn't Cantonese a type of Chinese??? Wow.. it must have become part of English now..) so I just kept talking in English saying I am not interested and hung up.
umm actually i think i read it from the news somewhere that now in US, they made kids in elementary learn mandarin la... mandatory gor jek tim...
because reports are saying that in less than 10 year ...

hahahaha.... i guess in their eyes only Mandarin is Chinese...
but in someway, they're not totally wrong, because Cantonese is really just one of the many "dialects" in China... may be just that we were living in the Canton Province and got spoiled
last time, I was walking with a taiwanese friend (and she knows that I'm Cantonese)... when I answered her a question in Mandarin, something like "ok, for sure"... she suddenly acted sooo surprised and said in Mandarin: "wa, 你會說中文!"...
o kaimui22, i don't think they call random people la... it's usually either you signed up for this or for that... and they sell "telmarketers" the "List"
often time, we signed up for things and they collected our info. without us really paying much attention to it la... say, credit card, cell phone, home phone, hydro bill, retail stores, msn, e-mails, ticket masters, Chinese TV, just to name a few... anything that says "create an account" basically collected your profile and started to sort it to labels one way or another... like... "Chinese" "income between 20000-50000" "family with kids" etc...
yea... crazy... i need to learn mandarin too... i was talking to suppliers in China before... spoke in English = 1 price, spoke in Mandarin = another price!
anyone know any good language exchange website to share? also interested to learn Korean
Littleprince, see my reply on tax return Capital Gain?
I say they try random numbers (or with an auto dialer) because my parents never use their cell phone number to sign up for anything...and our cell phone numbers (4 of them) are one after the other...for example, 604-999-1204, 1214, 1224, 1234...etc etc. I use my numbers to sign up for a lot of things but they never used theres. So...maybe they used an auto dialer. Of course...very possible that companies (like Fido?) sells our numbers too...they can't sell it to Canadian companies but they definitely can sell to US and international companies.
