going on a shopping day trip tmr down in the states... haven't done it for a while so i forgot what the exemption amount was and i looked online:
"What are your personal exemptions?
After each absence of 24 hours or more
You can claim up to CAN$50 worth of goods without paying any duties. This is your personal exemption. You must have the goods with you when you arrive in Canada and you cannot include tobacco products or alcoholic beverages in this exemption. If the goods you bring in are worth more than CAN$50 in total, you cannot claim this exemption. Instead, you have to pay full duties on all goods you bring in."
so........ what about less than 24 hrs?? what's the exemption amount?
well yes. that's the right thing to do. like someone else who mentioned in my thread about crossing the border... it's not a good idea to lie to them cuz if they catch you lying to them they'll blacklist you... and you'll probably get into trouble with them forever..
very often they'll ask to see what you have in your trunk too. some will even flip through every bag, matching up every single item on your receipts. they'd even do body searches and/or tell you to empty out everything in your pockets and purses/bags..
did they change the exemption amount at some point last year? i remember going last summer and someone told me it was $70 per person for less than 24 hrs or something..... i might remember incorrectly tho.
hmm... i guess i'll stay and shop locally then
was gonna go down to the states to shop at outlet but if i'm gonna be taxed for everything then it's not worth it
still 50 dollars. Just be honest and tell them the amount. They will doubt you if you do not spend anything. I did not get taxed even once. I once claimed up to 230 bucks for two people.
